Jacob A Story of Love and Deceit Jacob's story appears in Genesis 29-35. Jacob as a Young Man Genesis 25:24-34
Jacob Steals the Blessing Genesis 27:1-46 1
When Isaac was old and his eyes were dim so that he could not see, he
called Esau his older son, and said to him, "My son"; and he
answered, "Here I am." 2
He said, "Behold, I am old; I do not know the day of my death. 3
Now then, take your weapons, your quiver and your bow, and go out to the
field, and hunt game for me, 4
and prepare for me savory food, such as I love, and bring it to me that I
may eat; that I may bless you before I die." 5
Now Rebekah was listening when Isaac spoke to his son Esau. So when Esau
went to the field to hunt for game and bring it, 6
Rebekah said to her son Jacob, "I heard your father speak to your
brother Esau, 7
'Bring me game, and prepare for me savory food, that I may eat it, and
bless you before the LORD before I die.'
19
Jacob said to his father, "I am Esau your first-born. I have done as
you told me; now sit up and eat of my game, that you may bless me." 20
But Isaac said to his son, "How is it that you have found it so
quickly, my son?" He answered, "Because the LORD your God
granted me success." 21
Then Isaac said to Jacob, "Come near, that I may feel you, my son, to
know whether you are really my son Esau or not." 22
So Jacob went near to Isaac his father, who felt him and said, "The
voice is Jacob's voice, but the hands are the hands of Esau." 23
And he did not recognize him, because his hands were hairy like his
brother Esau's hands; so he blessed him. 24
He said, "Are you really my son Esau?" He answered, "I
am." 25
Then he said, "Bring it to me, that I may eat of my son's game and
bless you." So he brought it to him, and he ate; and he brought him
wine, and he drank. 26
Then his father Isaac said to him, "Come near and kiss me, my
son." 27
So he came near and kissed him; and he smelled the smell of his garments,
and blessed him, and said, "See, the smell of my son is as the smell
of a field which the LORD has blessed! 28
May God give you of the dew of heaven, and of the fatness of the earth,
and plenty of grain and wine. 29
Let peoples serve you, and nations bow down to you. Be lord over your
brothers, and may your mother's sons bow down to you. Cursed be every one
who curses you, and blessed be every one who blesses you!" 30
As soon as Isaac had finished blessing Jacob, when Jacob had scarcely gone
out from the presence of Isaac his father, Esau his brother came in from
his hunting. 31
He also prepared savory food, and brought it to his father. And he said to
his father, "Let my father arise, and eat of his son's game, that you
may bless me."
44 and stay with him a while, until your brother's fury turns away; 45 until your brother's anger turns away, and he forgets what you have done to him; then I will send, and fetch you from there. Why should I be bereft of you both in one day?" 46 Then Rebekah said to Isaac, "I am weary of my life because of the Hittite women. If Jacob marries one of the Hittite women such as these, one of the women of the land, what good will my life be to me?" Jacob's Dream Genesis 28:10-22 10 Jacob left Beer-sheba, and went toward Haran. 11 And he came to a certain place, and stayed there that night, because the sun had set. Taking one of the stones of the place, he put it under his head and lay down in that place to sleep.
12 And he dreamed that there was a ladder set up on the earth, and the top of it reached to heaven; and behold, the angels of God were ascending and descending on it! 13 And behold, the LORD stood above it and said, "I am the LORD, the God of Abraham your father and the God of Isaac; the land on which you lie I will give to you and to your descendants; 14 and your descendants shall be like the dust of the earth, and you shall spread abroad to the west and to the east and to the north and to the south; and by you and your descendants shall all the families of the earth bless themselves. 15 Behold, I am with you and will keep you wherever you go, and will bring you back to this land; for I will not leave you until I have done that of which I have spoken to you." 16 Then Jacob awoke from his sleep and said, "Surely the LORD is in this place; and I did not know it." 17 And he was afraid, and said, "How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven." 18 So Jacob rose early in the morning, and he took the stone which he had put under his head and set it up for a pillar and poured oil on the top of it. 19 He called the name of that place Bethel; but the name of the city was Luz at the first. 20 Then Jacob made a vow, saying, "If God will be with me, and will keep me in this way that I go, and will give me bread to eat and clothing to wear, 21 so that I come again to my father's house in peace, then the LORD shall be my God, 22 and this stone, which I have set up for a pillar, shall be God's house; and of all that thou givest me I will give the tenth to thee." Jacob Marries Two Sisters, Leah and Rachel Genesis 29:15-30 15
Then Laban said to Jacob, "Because you are my kinsman, should you
therefore serve me for nothing? Tell me, what shall your wages be?" Jacob Wrestles with the Angel Genesis 32:22-30
22
The same night he arose and took his two wives, his two maids, and his
eleven children, and crossed the ford of the Jabbok. 23
He took them and sent them across the stream, and likewise everything that
he had. 24
And Jacob was left alone; and a man wrestled with him until the breaking
of the day. 25
When the man saw that he did not prevail against Jacob, he touched the
hollow of his thigh; and Jacob's thigh was put out of joint as he wrestled
with him. 26
Then he said, "Let me go, for the day is breaking." But Jacob
said, "I will not let you go, unless you bless me." 27
And he said to him, "What is your name?" And he said,
"Jacob." 28
Then he said, "Your name shall no more be called Jacob, but Israel,
for you have striven with God and with men, and have prevailed." 29
Then Jacob asked him, "Tell me, I pray, your name." But he said,
"Why is it that you ask my name?" And there he blessed him. 30
So Jacob called the name of the place Peni'el, saying, "For I have
seen God face to face, and yet my life is preserved." |
